About

A group of interested citizens founded the county museum in 1979. The move to the present location on North Richmond Road in 1990 was made possible by generous contributions from the Marshall and Lillie Johnson Foundation, and Gulf Coast Medical Foundation, plus a sizable contribution from Wharton County. The Johnson's former residence, along with the wild game trophy room, is incorporated into the building.
